New Smackdown Womens Champion Crowned On This Weeks WWE Smackdown Episode (February, 21st 2017)
This Week on Smackdown saw the follow up to Naomi’s decision as to whether she would abdicate or keep her newly won Smackdown Women’s Title. Ultimately, it was revealed that Naomi’s Injury reportedly inflicted in the closing moments of her victorious contest at WWE Elimination Chamber was more serious and more extensive than first thought, and with a heavy heart, Naomi came to a decision to surrender the Women’s Title, leaving it vacant and open for a fellow women’s superstar to accomplish the feat.
Naomi would announce this in an in ring segment with Smackdowns GM Daniel Bryan, who would wholeheartedly go with the idea of forfeiting due to Smackdown needing an Active and Competing Women’s Champion, as her injury would be extensive enough to surpass the 30 day limit (this coming despite the scrutiny regarding the defenses of Dean Ambrose in his current IC Title run and Nikki Bella during some of her Divas Title Run going over that defined limit). After an emotional Naomi forfeited the title to focus on her rehab and hopeful return before WrestleMania, former champion Alexa Bliss emerged with a suggestion to Bryan to hand her the title due to Naomi’s forfeit, though it would be booked instead for Bliss to face Becky Lynch on the episode to crown a new Smackdown Women’s Champion. Bliss ultimately ended up winning over the former rival, becoming the first 2x Smackdown Women’s Champion in WWE History, and the first to win it on a regular Smackdown episode.
