LUCHA UNDERGROUND RESULTS: Atomicos Action and a Debut to Come! (September, 13th 2017)

Welcome all to this weeks Lucha Underground report, and we’ve got quite a few developments with the women of the temple to talk through. First we see the Worldwide Undergrounds Johnny Mundo, Taya and PJ Black joining the odd ally of Marty the Moth to take on the formed unit of Prince Puma, Fenix, Cage and Sexy Star, as well as more intense interactions with Catrina and the pre mentioned Cage and a future in ring debut. Ok that was a lot to type out in one paragraph-ish, so lets talk these through in consecutive order.

So first we see the Worldwide Underground, including Taya in a backstage gathering. Ricky Mandel has obtained himself an ID with the new official name of Ricky Mundo, though Johnny would be all against the use of the name. Regardless Ricky is a part of the Worldwide Underground, but tonight the Worldwide Underground have a task ahead, and Prince Puma needs to be dealt with, as one of their rival competitors in the upcoming Atomicos match.

In fact, the faction are a part of the opening match, as Melissa Santos introduces in single file, Cage, Sexy Star, Prince Puma and Fenix. While Fenix is the Television Love Interest, in case you havent heard, Santos is indeed Miss Cage and is expecting a baby with the dominant performer of the temple. Introduced next by Santos are the competing members of the Worldwide Underground, PJ Black, Taya and the Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo, with the equally troublesome Ricky Mandel and Jack Evans as accompaniment. Once in the ring Mundo surprisingly dismisses Ricky then brings out Marty the Moth as their ally for the match, non surprisingly since Fenix is in the match. This does not go down well with a worried looking Mel.

Marty is starting for Team Mundo against Sexy Star, despite the former Lucha Underground Champions want for Taya to be her opening opponent considering recent altercations on the show. She doesnt get as wanted, but gets close to getting a shot at Taya while pacing about the ring readying for an opening lock up. Taya sprints into the ring, shoves at Star then returns to her post to allow the legal competitors to take each other on. Star gets the first shot at offense once things have simmered, kicking the midsection of Marty. Star takes to the ropes, Marty following not too long behind, but before Marty can try to catch up to Star to deliver sneaky offense, he takes a back elbow to the chest. Star connects with hard slaps then dodges a clothesline attempt matrix style by Marty, chopping at him after. Star fires up but before she can do anything else, Marty hits with a hard kick. Marty whips Star to a corner but has his offense blocked by another kick from Star, who takes momentum with a tilt-a-whirl headscissor. A Groggy Marty reaches out to PJ, who tags in. Star steps out, replaced with Fenix.

A Double crossbody closes back and forth action between Fenix and PJ, prompting PJ to tag Johnny. Johnny is quick to dismiss himself once Fenix tags Cage, tagging in Taya, who is no stranger to the brutal abilities of Cage. However the ref will not allow the use of Cage’s powerful gauntlet thus Cage abides by the rules, and as he removes the Gauntlet to compete as the normal powerhouse, Taya delivers a dropkick to the back of Cage. This does not impress Cage, who shoves Taya with ease. He goes for a possible clothesline but Johnny, PJ and Marty charge in to save their female ally. Chaos ensues as the entire unit gang up on Cage, before leaving the powerhouse down in the corner to take Taya’s running double knees. Taya stomps down on Cage then engages in the traditional stable taunt, keeping Marty out of the equation. Cage is then back on his feet, face to face with the stable and Marty, many of which bolt. Johnny uses Taya as his shield, and the Luchadora is floored by a big clothesline. As Cage also floors Mundo with a vertical suplex, Crane makes his way to ringside, hands on Cages Gauntlet, which he takes off with. As Cage bolts off to pursue Crane, Prince Puma tags in, firing offense at the Worldwide Underground and also kicking Taya off the apron. Taya no longer competes from there, but is surely glad to watch the Worldwide Underground and Marty take the win. Johnny, Taya, PJ and Marty win the match.

Marty, however, is no part of their celebration. He is in close proximity of Melissa, who is very much terrified. He seizes Melissa, who tries to take a stand with hard slaps to Marty. Fenix eventually comes in to save the love interest by taking out Marty. Fenix embraces Melissa, who is joined by Sexy Star to end the post match segment.

It seems Crane has escaped from Cage, gauntlet still in hand which he delivers to Catrina within his shrine. Crane isn’t willing to just hand over the Gauntlet as thought, but is attacked by Mil, leaving the Gauntlet on the floor for Catrina to retrieve. Before the Mistress of the Underworld can use it for own intentions, Cage bursts into the dimly lit shrine and deals with a two on one attack from Crane and Mil for attempting to choke out Catrina. As the brawl extends itself, Dario seems to have found access to the shrine and sneaks off with the prized possession of Cage unnoticed.

Following this, it is announced that Melissa Santos shall make her in ring debut next week, joining Fenix to take on Mariposa and Marty the Moth.

Thoughts On:
Worldwide Underground/Marty vs Fenix/Star/Cage/Prince Puma: When i read this match was happening, i had to question why Cage was a part of it. Coming into it, every single babyface there should have a lack of trust/be wary of Cage because of the Gauntlet which brings him a level above everyone else and makes him a danger, though of course he was told not to use it in in ring competition, which he followed through with. However Cage vs Johnny was one of my fave rivalries in the promotion so to see them interact, no matter how brief, was a nice touch. I Didn’t expect Puma of all people to take the fall either so along with the pairing unpredictabilities in Lucha Underground, there’s the pinning predicaments also. The post match developments were intriguing as well. Marty plays the psychotic slime ball so well and Melissa standing up for herself is just another development that plays into her inevitable in ring debut, which is officially set for next week, which is very intriguing to watch. If Lucha Underground gets another season, i wouldn’t mind her teaming with Cage also. Of course this could have been left for Ultima Lucha, but thats the platform for Fenix and Marty’s heated showdown.

Catrina/Crane/Mil/Cage/Dario: I’m Glad they haven’t forgotten the teases between Jeremiah and Catrina, though we still don’t know who the man is that she really loves, though of course she could have meant Mil all along to mess with Jeremiah’s head. I’m actually gutted Catrina didn’t get to keep the Gauntlet because it would have been interesting to see what she and Mil could have done with it and what chaos they could have caused, but in the hands of Dario. Oh My Gosh. The Wheels are turning. Dario has released a blood covered monster in Matanza and actually killed someone on the show, so despite being an incredible character as a general manager, he is one sinister man behind that, and who knows what he could do with it, but surely this is leading to something between Cage and Matanza, though i cant remember exactly whether Cage is on the Ultima Lucha card.
